Energy management and planning
Responsibly optimizing energy assets begins with proper system planning. Through load forecasting, system modeling, business case evaluations, and resource planning, we partner with our clients to increase efficiency and improve reliability for the network. Our planning group understands the power system and how to apply technologies such as HVDC and FACTS. Our team is well versed in all system study tools, as well as global interconnection requirements, and can leverage this experience to the success of your project. We plan, design, and install all aspects of oil and gas facilities inclusive of well tie-ins, gathering systems, field compressor stations and more as well. We can assist with any difficult issues, and we’ll install the communication systems required to allow you to monitor and control remotely.
Carbon capture, utilization, and storage
To transition from the carbon-intensive economy of today to a more sustainable future, industrial emitters are increasingly looking to decarbonize their processes through carbon capture. We’re designing and implementing a variety of different carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies to best meet the needs of specific processes, while also providing transport and sequestration (or utilization) solutions best suited to the opportunities available at each client’s facility.
Sustainable fuels and chemicals
With growing global environmental consciousness and the emergence of the circular economy, the ambition to create fuel and chemical products from biomass and/or waste is becoming an imperative. By applying our gasification and syngas treatment expertise, we can devise options to convert just about any feedstock into sustainable fuels and chemicals.
Low-carbon hydrogen production
Hydrogen is gaining momentum as an alternative fuel source for processing heat, electricity generation, transportation, and industrial processes as reagent. Produced through various pathways, hydrogen—especially blue and green, which are recognized for their low to zero carbon emissions —is a pillar that brings us one step closer to a green future. Our active work in emerging pathways across the hydrogen production spectrum provides tailored, low-carbon-intensity hydrogen solutions for our clients.
Clean energy production
As we transition to a low-carbon world, strategic investments in clean energy production are required. Whether it’s solar or wind combined with energy storage, long-distance transmission solutions, hydroelectric, geothermal, or biomass, multi-faceted solutions are needed to ensure that dispatchable electricity needs can be delivered sustainably. Among these enablers, we require modern electricity networks to transform the way we distribute more power, across further distances, and between asynchronous systems, all while maintaining a high level of system security and reliability.
Emerging energy carriers, such as ammonia, to produce green hydrogen and other chemicals present new and interesting long-term clean energy production, transportation and distribution strategies, especially in locations where sustainable energy resources are limited.
Hybrid power systems
As we seek to achieve 100 percent renewable power penetration, a deliberate and calibrated approach is required. Our pioneer hybrid solutions, supported by energy storage capabilities, maximize renewable power when combined with baseload conventional power generation. This hybrid power solution drastically reduces reliance on fossil fuels for power generation and achieves a reliable and resilient electricity supply with lower greenhouse gas emissions and a lower price of electricity, particularly in remote locations. This can support both the decarbonization and reduction of power costs for oil and gas facilities as well.
Energy storage
The demand for renewable energy is on the rise. While potentially ubiquitous, wind and solar energy are intermittent in nature and as a result, require other technologies as part of a complete energy solution, including Energy Storage Systems. Presently, lithium-ion battery deployments are experiencing exponential uptake while other technologies, such as well-proven pumped hydro or compressed air storage technologies, are potential options for long-duration energy storage.
Numerous other technologies are moving up the technology maturity ladder; flow batteries, for example, are becoming increasingly practical for longer duration energy storage applications. They and others are currently positioned as key enablers to achieving a future where electricity is predominantly derived from low-carbon technologies. While utility grid-scale solutions are highly impactful, the increasing drive to reduce fossil fuel consumption, use local resources, increase resiliency, and improve lives via reliable electricity generation at smaller, more remote sites and communities can also be enabled through energy storage systems.
Displacing coal with natural gas
Natural gas prices have declined over recent years making it one of the most affordable fuels available. It is also one of the cleanest fuels available, with significantly lower emissions than diesel, HFO, and coal. From power generation to liquid transportation fuels and chemicals, natural gas presents a significant opportunity to support the transition away from coal.
Carbon-free nuclear technology development
The next generation of reactor designs—like small modular reactors and fusion energy—are on the brink of commercialization and new markets are emerging. We’re partnering with clients to conceptualize, develop, license, and implement their carbon-free nuclear technology solutions. These upcoming technology solutions can provide on-site, low-carbon power and process heat to industrial facilities.
Low-carbon thermal processes
As we seek to bridge the gap presented by renewable energy sources that are more intermittent in nature, low-carbon solutions such as thermal/geothermal energy for district heating can have a role to play. It presents an opportunity to optimize your operation and reduce your overall carbon footprint. With energy conservation in mind, we’re developing energy recovery and optimization solutions that are cost-efficient and sustainable by reducing waste heat generated.
An alternative power source to consider is geothermal energy production, which offers a stable baseload, long-term, low-risk advantage with the potential to also provide by-product heat. Through the gathering, aggregating, and interpreting of geologic data, our experienced geothermal experts provide you with the skills required for your project’s success.
Thermal plants today are facing challenges to fill in the gaps of the intermittency of renewables and be more responsive to the needs of a changing market.
